THE FOOTBRIDGE

  • The new pedestrian footbridge over the railway lines will replace the existing bridge, which is more than 50 years old. The new bridge is expected to last more than 100 years
  • The community told us they wanted a footbridge that was safer and more well lit and this has been incorporated into the design
  • The new footbridge design is much more user friendly and safe. There are 16 new CCTV cameras for security including one in each lift. There are more entry points, bicycle channels, and good lighting
  • Over 12,000 people use the station every day. They will soon be able to move much more easily and quickly on the new footbridge which is six metres wide
  • The new footbridge is constructed of steel and concrete, the panels in the bridge are solid with vandal proof glass
  • The design of the bridge was initially undertaken by Hyder Consulting along with Bruce Henderson Architects.  The design and construct Architect is ‘Architectus” and the engineering designer is GHD.  The footbridge was designed to reflect the industrial history of Footscray
  • The new footbridge is being built next to the existing bridge, and construction will be completed by mid to late 2010
  • During construction some temporary access arrangements to the old footbridge will be in place. Once the new footbridge is completed in 2010, the old footbridge will be removed
  • 40 full time jobs were created, including direct jobs and the employment of subcontractors and suppliers in the construction of the bridge
  • An environmental management program is in place to minimise the impacts of dust, noise, heavy traffic and machinery
  • The forecourts at Irving Street, McNab Avenue and Hyde Street will be completed by late 2010
